Marauders Close Out Season with Winning Record
Saturday, June 06, 2009 |
The Columbus Marauders played their final game of the 2009 season today at home against the Cleveland Warriors, winning the game by the final score of 29-20. The win against Cleveland solidified the Marauders' first season as a winning one, vaulting them to a 3-2 finish.
The Marauders struggled early on in the season, losing their first two games on the road to the Cleveland Warriors and the Orange County Lawmen. The Marauders recovered from the skid during their home opener, spoiling the undefeated season of the Dallas Defenders with a 20-16 win.
The crown jewel of the Columbus Marauders' 2009 season came on the road against the Chicago Enforcers. The Enforcers were poised on the brink of a trip to the NPSFL Division II national championship game, needing only to defeat the then 1-2 Columbus Marauders to solidify their place. Down 14-0 with 1:30 left in the game, quarterback Shawn Fuqua and wide receiver Noah Bookman hooked up for a TD strike, with a successful 2 point conversion bringing the score to 14 - 8. A clutch "3 and out" stand by the Marauders defense, as well as brilliant clock management and use of timeouts by the coaching staff, put the ball back in the hands of the Marauders. Once again Fuqua and Bookman rose to the challenge, hooking up for their second TD pass of the game. Another 2 point conversion and defensive stand by the Marauders left the Chicago Enforcers with a 50+ yard field goal attempt to lock in their place in the championship game, but the kick was wide left. When the dust settled, the Columbus Marauders had once again played spoiler, upsetting the Chicago Enforcers 16-14 and shattering their championship dreams.
